The effect of exposure to NO2 and SO2 on frost hardiness in Calluna 6ulgaris

چکیده
Heather (Calluna 6ulgaris) was grown in pots in a natural heathland soil and exposed in outdoor fumigation chambers (‘solardomes’) to 40 nl l of both nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and sulphur dioxide (SO2) simultaneously. Plants exposed to NO2 and SO2 for 8 months over a growing season (February–November) showed increases in the growth of shoots (+37%) and the whole plant (+15%) and a raised ratio of root to shoot dry matter in comparison with control (charcoal-filtered air) plants. Fumigation raised the average foliar concentrations of nitrogen (+34%) and sulphur (+173%). The improvements in growth due to pollutant exposure were countered by reductions in tolerance to experimental acute frost. Cellular damage of heather shoots was assessed using measurements of electrolyte leakage from cut shoots following controlled over-night frosts. The rates of leakage were consistently increased in those plants that had been exposed to NO2 and SO2 for 5 months or more in comparison with non-fumigated controls. In some cases a greater leakage rate was recorded in fumigated plants than in controls even in the absence of freezing temperatures. The pollutants caused a similar reduction in frost tolerance whether exposure was given during the hardening period (August–January) or the de-hardening stage (November–April). These results support the hypothesis that low concentrations of air pollutants can reduce the tolerance of plants to freezing stress. © 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Relationship Between Frost Injury and Ion Leakage as an Indicator of Cold Hardiness in 60 Almond Selections
Frost damage to the flowers and early developing fruits is one of the most limiting factors in almond cultivation regions of the world. This study was undertaken to understand almond response to frost damage concerning ion leakage in order to develop a criterion for the selection of frost-resistant cultivars in field experiments. In this work, 60 almond cultivars and genotypes on the basis fros...
متن کاملبرآورد تعداد بیماری و مرگ منتسب به آلاینده های SO2 و NO2 با استفاده از مدل AirQ در شهر همدان
Introduction: NO2 and SO2 as gaseous air pollutants are involved in many global air accidents, and are respiratory tract irritants that can cause numerous health effects in humans. Therefore, due to the necessity of studies in this field and the absence of any similar study in the city of Hamadan, the aim of this study was quantification of health effects attributed to NO2 and SO2 in Hamadan ci...
متن کاملQuantifying the threshold frost hardiness for over-wintering survival of wheat in Iran, using simulation
The value of frost tolerance in wheat is increased with decreasing the temperature in late autumn and/or early winter (phase I, acclimation), then shows plateau state for a period with the coldest temperature (II), finally appears to decrease with warming the temperature (III, de-acclimation). This study was aimed to determine the threshold frost hardiness in wheat for avoiding ...
متن کاملEffect of Short-term Exposure of Two Different Concentrations of Sulphur Dioxide and Nitrogen Dioxide Mixture on Some Biochemical Parameter of Soybean (glycine Max (l.) Merr.)
The effect of elevated level of SO2+NO2 on some physiological and biochemical parameters of Glycine max were examined. Twelve days olds Soybean (Glycine max) seedling were exposed to two different (2% and 3%) levels of SO2+NO2 mixture. Fumigants were applied for 30 minutes per day, 3 days per week for 3 weeks duration. Aeration with enriched SO2+NO2 air resulted in higher phenolic content as co...
